Her research currently focuses on the ethical dilemmas faced by designers (and society) as the far-reaching consequences of the design act and the broader role of the designer in culture are reassessed. We recently caught up with her to talk about her work and research.

AET Lecturer Yuliya Lanina uses Foundry time to tell "Herstory"

Early in November, the Foundry makerspace in the Fine Arts Library welcomed its second artist-in-residence, Russian-born American multimedia artist and AET Lecturer Yuliya Lanina. Lanina spent the better part of her time at the Foundry working on a collection of animatronic projects, from doll to human-size in stature, that are intended to interact with the viewer, with sensors that activate motion and audio when a viewer is in proximity.

Industry and Academic Veteran Kate Canales Joins College of Fine Arts as New Chair of the Department of Design

November 15, 2017

The College of Fine Arts at The University of Texas at Austin today announced the hire of a new chair of the Department of Design in the School of Design and Creative Technologies. Kate Canales comes to the Department of Design from Southern Methodist University (SMU) where she serves as Director of Design and Innovation Programs and a Clinical Professor in the Lyle School of Engineering. Canales will assume the role July 1.

Design lecturer James Walker has a background ranging from environments, branding, illustration and interaction. His work has been featured in several publications and books; was part of larger collective projects that are now in the permanent collections of the Library of Congress, MOMA, and the Brooklyn Museum; and has won several design-focused awards from organizations such as the AIGA and Communication Arts. Walker received his M.F.A. in Visual Communication and Design from Virginia Commonwealth University.
