Where are the Black Graphic Designers?: 50 Years of History and Advocacy

In 1987, Cheryl D. Holmes Miller wrote an article for Print Magazine called, “Black Designers: Missing in Action” as a part of her Master’s thesis at Pratt Institute. The notorious article shook the branches of the design community, calling out the profession for being predominantly white. Since then, she has dedicated her career to challenging the design profession, advocating for BIPOC and gender equity, and serving the BIPOC community with award-winning designs. In 2016, Cheryl wrote a follow-up article entitled “Black Designers: Still Missing in Action?” and four-part final volume, “Black Designers: Forward in Action,” completes the trilogy as she passes the baton to the next generation of designers. You can read Part 1 here.

In “Miller’s Own; My History of Black Graphic Design,” Cheryl will share and celebrate the history of Black Graphic Design over the last 50 years. This event will be her fourth and final public lecture during her tenure as Designer in Residence for the Department of Design at The University of Texas at Austin.
