Arotin Hartounian

Headshot of Arotin Hartounian

Lecturer, M.A. in Design focused on Health

Arotin is a systems and service designer with deep experience transforming healthcare experiences across major U.S. health systems. Over the past six years, he has designed and led initiatives for organizations including Baylor Scott & White Health, Ascension (one of the largest healthcare systems in the US), and the Design Institute for Health at Dell Medical School. His work spans national experience standards, clinical service-line redesign, global health collaborations, and published research in the Journal of the American Heart Association.

With a practice grounded in systems thinking, qualitative research, and visual communication, Arotin develops services and strategies that balance human needs with operational and organizational realities. His portfolio includes projects that reduce unnecessary emergency department utilization, improve patient–staff communication in high-acuity settings, enhance surgeon recruitment and retention, and optimize inpatient discharge and post-acute care pathways. He has also served as a City of Los Angeles Design Fellow, contributing systems design expertise to the Mayor’s Innovation Team to reimagine the future of the city’s workforce development ecosystem.

Arotin holds a B.S. in Industrial and Product Design from ArtCenter College of Design, with advanced training in Systems Oriented Design through the Master’s Exchange Program at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design. Before entering the design field, he spent nearly a decade as a professional illustrator—work that continues to inform his clarity and craft in visual problem-solving.

Arotin is an active member of both the Systemic Design Association and Systems Innovation organization. He has also been a valued contributor to the MA in Design focused on Health program, leading Friday Insights sessions and mentoring multiple students on systems design throughout their graduate journey. His combination of field expertise, systems fluency, and design craft brings a highly relevant, practice-based perspective to the classroom.
