Dear Design and Arts & Entertainment Students,
I want to welcome you to the School of Design and Creative Technologies (SDCT) with a new Department of Design and Department of Arts and Entertainment Technologies. In preparing over the summer for what this new school would look and feel like, we always considered first what was in your best interest. Every step of the way, Dean Dempster, Bruce Pennycook, Monica Penick and I thought about how to better support your academic experience and development as future graduates of the College of Fine Arts.
We are excited about the new school. It is an opportunity for all of you to be the generation that leads the charge in the fast growing creative economy. SDCT will focus on educating students for creative professions across a wide range of disciplines. We’re building key partnerships with businesses, non-profits and government to give students unique, real-world connections and hands-on experiences that are necessary for creatives and non-creatives alike.
We intend to pay special attention to what Austin’s robust tech, game, health and design markets have to offer, and we’ve even hired a Director of Creative Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Jan Ryan, to help support our mission and coach our students on how to become creative business leaders. Jan is a serial entrepreneur, coach and mentor.
I came to campus to work with incredible students like you and to support you to do your best work and become active members of our communities. The College of Fine Arts wants to be a driver in the creative economy. Now we have a huge opportunity to be a part of shaping that, and most importantly, we want you to be at the heart of this movement.
We’re all creative in one way or another, and I aim to help teach students to use their creativity to do something that makes an impact. That’s what drives me. That's why I want to do this.
I thank you for your enthusiasm and passion. We have that in common. I look forward to working with all of you.
Proudly your new Assistant Dean,
